The Birthplace of UBF World Campus Mission
“Bible Korea, World Mission”— UBF Founding Vision, 1961
Founded in Gwangju, South Korea in 1961, UBF has carried the Gospel across all of Asia under the vision of “Bible Korea, World Mission.” Beginning with the pioneering of Hong Kong in 1986, it has grown over 40 years to 137 chapters in 14 countries.
Five Eras of Asia Mission
On September 1, 1961, Pastor Samuel Lee (Chang-Woo Lee) and missionary Sarah Barry co-founded UBF in Gwangju. In 1968, the Daily Bread was published. In 1969, the first overseas missionaries were sent (to West Germany). In 1975, M. Isaac Ko's short-term visit to Japan planted the first seed of Asian mission.
In 1986, “the Lydia of Asia,” M. Angela Kim, arrived in Hong Kong — becoming Asia's first UBF missionary and the archetype of the self-supporting mission model. In 1987, M. Jimmy Lee was sent to India. In 1988, the first worship service was held in Tokyo, Japan. In 1989, Indonesia was pioneered. In 1991, Mongolia and Kazakhstan were pioneered.
Hong Kong UBF grew to 5 chapters with over 115 worshippers, becoming the hub of Asian mission. At JNU in India, indigenous leaders were raised. Almaty UBF in Kazakhstan began full-scale ministry. Around 2002, M. Peter (Ban Seok) Lee pioneered Bangkok, Thailand. In 2004, the World Mission Report (77 countries, 2,800 attendees) was held.
In 2005, Dr. Mark Hui from Hong Kong pioneered Taipei, Taiwan — the first case of a national pioneering another nation. In 2006, Indonesia produced a reverse-sent missionary to the USA. In 2007, Japan UBF secured a 4-story headquarters building. In 2010, Cambodia was pioneered (M. Joseph D. Lee). In 2011, UBF's 50th anniversary was celebrated (approx. 5,000 attendees).
In 2015, Sri Lanka was pioneered (M. Barnabas Baek). In 2019, Indonesia UBF celebrated its 30th anniversary (250 attendees) and Japan UBF its 30th anniversary (128 attendees). In 2021, an online World Mission Report was held amid COVID-19. In 2022, Malaysia was pioneered. In 2026, the Asia Directors Conference was held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan (69 attendees).

Asia is home to over 4.5 billion people — more than 60% of the world's population. The harvest field is immense with millions of university students.
Asia has world-class universities in every major city. Campus ministry reaches future leaders who will shape their nations.
Young Asians are searching for meaning beyond materialism. Many are open to studying the Bible and discovering Jesus Christ.
Disciples raised in Asian mission fields are being sent to other continents. Reverse missions are happening from Indonesia to the USA, from Hong Kong to Taiwan, and from Kazakhstan to Turkey.
UBF Asia Mission holds a bold vision toward the 80th anniversary of UBF's founding in 2041.
